CentOS 6: interview with Karanbir Singh

CentOS developers are working hard to release CentOS 6, the latest incarnation of the popular Red Hat rebuild, widely used around the world. We decided to make some questions about CentOS 6 status (italian language here) to Karanbir Singh, a long time CentOS developer, part of the CentOS Admin team, infrastructure team and responsible for the CentOS Build services.

Q: Recently you wrote a tweet regarding CentOS 6 status asking your readers to choose between CentOS 6 or 5.6. Could you summarize the results obtained from the readers’ answers?

A: “The aim of that question was to get a sense for what people consider to be more important and how they prioritise things. For us, thats a big deal – delivering and working on whats the most important thing at the moment. We like to think of ourselves as being a fairly agile group of people. And like any small agile team, its important to focus on the most important thing for the time rather than spreading the wings too thin and not being able to deliver on any count. The user feedback was as expected, a large majority consider 5.6 to be the more important delivery since it impacts an existing installed production base. So thats what we are working to release first”.

Interview with Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe

We have the opportunity to interview Tristan Nitot (in italiano su Webnews), president of Mozilla Europe. Tristan speaks about the relashionship between Mozilla and Google, Chrome and the future of Firefox on mobile platforms.

When the economic crisis began, many have wondered what was the real sustainability of those businesses that rely on less traditional business. Going to the heart of the problem: which is the Mozilla Foundation’s response to the pressures of economic crisis?

Most of the Mozilla revenue comes from deals from Search Engine partners. They receive traffic from the Firefox start page or the Firefox search box (on the top-right corner of the browser) and pay Mozilla for it. So far, we are not concerned by the crisis. We’re a very frugal organization from the start, so we’re ready to face the crisis, should it hit us.

Interview with Jean-Philippe Guillemin, Zenwalk’s creator

Zenwalk is one of the most promising Linux distribution. Based on Slackware, the distro is lightweight, simple and stable.

We decided to make some questions to Jean-Philippe Guillemin, Zenwalk’s creator, regarding future plans and developments about this “GNU-Linux Operating System”.

First of all, could you tell us something about yourself, for a brief introduction?

I am 36 years old, married, and working as Security Engineer for the Telindus Corporation. When I started the Zenwalk project I used to handle everything from packaging, mirroring, coding, and Web administration. Now most tasks are handled by the Zenwalk team (including regular project management). My job in Zenwalk is reduced to the administration tools development, kernel configuration, Desktop design, and strategic evolving decisions. This organization allows me to spend most of my free time on my main hobby: guitar (ìm part in two Jazz-fusion trio bands), as well as some readings (SF), and taking care of my family.
